Sclerotherapy of “spider veins” on the legs
Book a visitWhat does sclerotherapy of leg "spider veins" involve?
Liquid sclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment used for dilated blood vessels, the so-called "spider veins", which most often appear on the thighs, calves and behind the knees. The treatment involves introducing a liquid sclerosing agent through a thin needle directly into the affected vessels. This substance causes controlled damage to the vessel's endothelium, leading to its fibrosis and closure. The whole procedure usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of lesions. It is practically painless, although it may be accompanied by a slight burning or pricking sensation.
After sclerotherapy, compression tights or stockings must be worn for several days – according to the specialist's recommendations. The compression supports the vessel-closing process, minimises the risk of complications and improves the final aesthetic result. Proper compression therapy is a key element of the whole treatment's effectiveness.

Treatment effects
The first effects are visible after just a few weeks. The closed vessels begin to fade, and the skin regains an even colour and smoothness. For more extensive lesions a series of treatments may be necessary, but even after the first session patients notice a clear improvement. Liquid sclerotherapy not only improves the aesthetics of the legs but can also prevent the further development of venous insufficiency.
Indications4
Liquid sclerotherapy is recommended for people who notice on their legs:
- fine, dilated blood vessels (telangiectasia)
- vascular "spider veins"
- small reticular vein changes, especially on the thighs and calves
- aesthetic changes that affect mental comfort and self-confidence
Contraindications6
Although the treatment is safe, there are certain contraindications:
- pregnancy and breastfeeding
- active skin inflammation in the treatment area
- deep vein thrombosis (current or past)
- circulatory insufficiency
- allergy to a component of the sclerosing agent
- systemic infections and fever
Does the treatment need to be repeated?
Yes, liquid sclerotherapy may require several sessions, especially when the lesions are more severe. A series of 2–3 treatments a few weeks apart is usually recommended to achieve the full aesthetic effect. After the therapy, maintenance treatments can be performed once a year, depending on the patient's individual predisposition and the appearance of new vascular changes.
