Its symptom is pain, redness of the peri-nail area, and, as the problem is neglected, the so-called „wild meat”, accompanied by purulent discharge. Usually at this stage the pain is very bothersome, which can make movement difficult or impossible. Typically, ingrowth occurs in the toenail. This nail is the thickest and strongest, and the nail shafts are the largest („meatiest”). There are also cases in which not only the toe grows in, but also the other nails. It should be remembered that a micro-trauma is formed at the site of ingrowth (when the ingrowth is large, it can be a wound the length of the nail), so it is very important to maintain hygiene of the area. „Prevention is better than cure.”

Why do nails grow in?

There are many factors that contribute to ingrown nails. The most common of these is… the overprotectiveness of our mothers and, at a later age, ourselves. As is well known, every mother wants her child to look perfect, so she wants to cut her child’s nails perfectly („And here I’ll trim more, here I’ll shorten, here I’ll trim…”). Note that the nails should be cut straight/square, not „round”. It is also very important to carefully check the edges to see if there is any piece left (the so-called splinter), which can grow into the shaft and cause inflammation.

Another factor, equally common, is trauma. Even a minor injury can cause ingrowth. When this happens, the nail is „hammered” into the shaft or, if the nail plate is broken off – it grows back badly, so it needs to be given a new growth trajectory. Few people realize that also too intensive clipping or pushing back of the cuticles leads to ingrowth. A kind of trauma on the plate also includes the pressure exerted on the plate by a deformity of the toe commonly known as hallux valgus. The toe is twisted, so there is a permanent pressure of the nail on the shoe. In the case of a healthy foot, the same kind of pressure accompanies the wearing of shoes that are too tight, overly supportive socks, and high-heeled shoes with the front „in the tip”-then the toes are compressed and the nails are pressed firmly into the shafts.

An important factor in causing ingrown nails is genetics. Ingrown nails are not hereditary, only the structure of the nail – when the shafts are large and the plate is small, the nail can stick in and hurt (that’s why sometimes even in several-week-old, -month-old children the nails grow in) . Also, the structure of the foot, the shape of the toes, their positioning – all this matters in ingrowth.

Other factors include pregnancy, cyclic nail fungus, being overweight and ill-fitting footwear for foot-straining sports (such as running).

How to deal with ingrowth?

As mentioned earlier, if a wound is created, it is very important to maintain hygiene of the ingrown area – disinfection with Octanisept (available at pharmacies). Unfortunately, ointments, creams and other specifics against ingrowth do NOT work. A non-invasive method against ingrowth is to place a so-called orthonyxial clamp, which „lifts” the nail and gives it a growth trajectory. The procedure takes from 30-50 minutes. Such a bracket is worn by the patient for about 3-4 weeks, after which it must be replaced with a new one. The treatment time depends on the condition of the finger, the commitment of the treated and how fast the nails grow. After the procedure, the patient is given instructions on how to further accelerate the treatment period. The buckle looks aesthetically pleasing, like a small piece of jewelry on the finger. For women, while wearing the buckle, it is not advisable to apply hybrid, and when there is no inflammation – you can successfully paint your nails. While wearing the buckle, avoid swimming pools, saunas, and other public places where fungal infection can occur.

Ingrown nail – this problem affects both men and women.
